Unlike this time last year, hand sanitizer, toilet paper, and rice are all in stock at your local department store. But there is one item you probably won’t find: sports and Pokemon trading cards. Due to nostalgia, interest from social media influencers, and a whole lot of time stuck at home, trading cards have emerged as an alternative asset this past year. Some of the rarest ones—a Michael Jordan rookie card and a rare Charizard Pokemon card, for example—recently sold for $738,000 and $311,800, respectively.
